About this calculator
This calculator estimates a likely ovulation date and fertile window based on the first day of your last period, your average cycle length, and your luteal phase length. It is intended as a general planning estimate rather than a precise or diagnostic prediction.
How the calculation works
- Ovulation day = cycle length − luteal phase length (14 days by default)
- Fertile window = the 5 days before ovulation through the day after
- Next period = first day of last period + cycle length

How it works in plain English
The calculator works backward from the start of your next expected period. It assumes your next period will begin one full cycle length after the first day of your last period, and that ovulation happens a set number of days, the luteal phase length, before that next period starts. By default the luteal phase is set to 14 days, since that phase tends to be more consistent in length than the first half of the cycle, but you can adjust it if you track your own cycle closely.
Once it has an estimated ovulation day, the calculator marks a fertile window covering the five days before ovulation through the day after it. This window is wider than just the ovulation day itself because sperm can survive inside the body for several days, so intercourse before ovulation can still result in fertilization even though the egg itself is only viable for roughly a day after release.
The result also includes a calendar strip showing each day around the estimated window labeled by fertility level, plus the projected date of your next period based on your stated cycle length.
The formula
- Ovulation day (cycle day count) = cycle length - luteal phase length
- Fertile window = 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after
- Next period = first day of last period + cycle length
Worked example
For a last period starting on cycle day 1, a 28-day average cycle, and the default 14-day luteal phase, ovulation is estimated on cycle day 28 - 14 = 14, meaning 13 days after the period started.
The fertile window then spans from cycle day 9 through cycle day 15, and the next period is projected 28 days after the last one began. Someone with a shorter or longer average cycle, or a different luteal phase, would see these dates shift earlier or later accordingly.
For comparison, someone with a shorter 24-day cycle and the same 14-day luteal phase would have estimated ovulation on cycle day 24 - 14 = 10, with a fertile window from cycle day 5 through cycle day 11, and a next period projected 24 days after their last one began. The shorter overall cycle shifts every date earlier, but the same 14-day gap is still held constant between ovulation and the next expected period.

Why does the fertile window start before ovulation?

What if my cycle length varies a lot month to month?
