About this calculator
This calculator combines several assignment or exam scores with their assigned weights to produce a single overall grade. Students and teachers use it to see where a course average stands before or after a syllabus is complete.
How the calculation works
- Weighted points = score × weight for each item
- Weighted average = total weighted points ÷ total weight entered
- When weights total 100%, the average is the final course grade

How it works in plain English
Weighted grading assigns each category — homework, quizzes, midterms, a final exam — a percentage of the total course grade rather than treating every assignment equally. To combine them, each score is multiplied by its weight, and those weighted points are added together.
The sum of weighted points is then divided by the total weight actually entered, not always by a fixed 100, because students often want to check their standing partway through a term before every category has a grade yet. When every category's weight is filled in and totals 100%, the result is the final course grade.
If the weights entered add up to less than 100%, the calculator still produces an average, but it reflects only the graded work so far — it is a running average, not a guaranteed final grade, since remaining assignments could shift it up or down.
The formula
- Weighted points = score x weight, for each item
- Weighted average = total weighted points / total weight entered
Worked example
A student has three graded categories so far: homework at 85% worth 20% of the grade, a midterm at 78% worth 30%, and quizzes at 90% worth 15%. Weighted points are 85x20=1,700, 78x30=2,340, and 90x15=1,350, for a total of 5,390. Total weight entered is 20+30+15=65%. Dividing 5,390 by 65 gives a running average of about 82.9%. Because 35% of the grade — likely the final exam — has not been entered yet, this is the standing grade so far, not the final one. Suppose the final exam is worth that remaining 35% and the student scores 88% on it. Adding 88x35=3,080 to the earlier 5,390 gives 8,470 total weighted points, now divided by the full 100% weight, for a final course grade of 84.7%. That final figure is higher than the 82.9% running average because the exam score exceeded the prior average, pulling the overall grade upward once every category is accounted for.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator scales the average across whatever weight you have entered, which is useful for checking your grade partway through a course. Once every category is filled in and the weights total 100%, the result becomes your true final grade rather than a partial estimate.
Should I include ungraded assignments in the calculation?
No, leave the weight blank on anything not yet graded. Including a zero or guessed score for future work would pull your running average down artificially. The calculator is designed to reflect only the work that has actually been scored.
Can this handle extra credit?
You can enter extra credit as its own row with a small weight and a score reflecting the credit earned, which will nudge the weighted average up. Just be aware this only works cleanly if your instructor treats extra credit as additive rather than as a separate curve.
Why is my weighted average different from a simple average of my scores?
A simple average treats every assignment equally, while a weighted average reflects how much each category actually counts toward your grade. A single low quiz worth 5% affects your grade far less than a midterm worth 30%, even if both scores are numerically similar.
