About this calculator

This converter changes a weight or mass value from one unit into another, covering everyday metric units like grams and kilograms, everyday US and imperial units like ounces and pounds, and specialized units like stones, US tons, and troy ounces used for precious metals. It is handy for cooking, shipping, fitness tracking, and comparing product weights listed in different units.

How it works in plain English

Although the words weight and mass are used loosely, this tool treats them the way people do in daily life, converting the number attached to one unit into the equivalent number for another unit of mass. Behind the scenes, each supported unit is linked to a single base unit, the kilogram, through an exact multiplication factor, and every conversion passes through that base value.

Metric units such as milligrams, grams, kilograms, and tonnes scale by simple powers of ten. Avoirdupois units, the everyday system used for most goods in the United States, include ounces and pounds, while stones are common in some countries for body weight, and US tons differ from other ton definitions used elsewhere. Troy ounces are a separate, slightly heavier unit reserved almost exclusively for precious metals like gold and silver.

To convert, pick your starting unit and target unit, then enter a value; the answer appears instantly and updates as you keep typing. A combined table below the main result shows the same quantity expressed in every unit the tool supports, so you can scan across grams, pounds, stones, and more without running separate calculations, and you can adjust the number of decimal places shown.

The formula

  • value_in_kg = value x factor_from
  • result = value_in_kg / factor_to
  • 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 oz = 28.349523125 g, 1 stone = 6.35029318 kg, 1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g

Worked example

Say you want to know how many kilograms are in 10 pounds. The tool multiplies 10 by the pound factor, 0.45359237, giving 4.5359237 kilograms.

If you then wanted the answer in ounces instead, it would take that same 4.5359237 kilograms and divide by the ounce factor expressed in kilograms, giving 160 ounces, since a pound contains exactly 16 ounces. Because every unit routes through the kilogram, mixing units like this, starting in pounds and finishing in ounces, still gives a fully accurate result without needing a separate direct formula for every possible pair.

Frequently asked questions

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A regular avoirdupois ounce, used for food and most everyday goods, equals about 28.35 grams, while a troy ounce equals about 31.10 grams. Troy ounces are heavier and are used almost exclusively for weighing precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, so the two should never be mixed up.

Why does the US ton differ from other ton definitions?

The US ton, also called a short ton, equals 2000 pounds or 907.18474 kilograms. Other countries commonly use the metric tonne, equal to 1000 kilograms, or the long ton, equal to 2240 pounds. All three are called tons in everyday speech, so checking which definition applies matters for accurate conversions.

How many pounds are in a stone?

A stone equals exactly 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kilograms. It remains a common way to state body weight in some countries, even though it is not part of the metric system, so this converter includes it alongside more universal units like kilograms and pounds.

Does the converter distinguish weight from mass?

For everyday purposes it treats them the same, converting the numeric value people normally write on scales and labels. True weight technically depends on gravity while mass does not, but for cooking, shipping, and fitness this distinction rarely matters, so the tool focuses on the practical, commonly used meaning.

Can I compare a value across many units at once?

Yes. Once you enter a value, the results table lists it converted into every supported unit of mass simultaneously, including grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, stones, and troy ounces, so you can compare them side by side instead of converting one pair at a time.
