How it works in plain English
Every time zone is defined as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, which serves as the fixed reference point that all local times are measured against. When you enter a date and time in a source time zone, the calculator first converts that local time into its equivalent UTC moment.
From that UTC moment, it then applies the offset of the destination time zone to produce the matching local time there. Because many regions observe daylight saving time for part of the year, the calculator uses time zone rules tied to the actual calendar date you select, rather than a single fixed offset, so the same conversion can differ between a summer date and a winter date.
This matters most around the start and end of daylight saving periods, when two regions can temporarily be one hour closer together or further apart than usual, and it is also why some conversions produce a time on a different calendar day than the one you started with.
Worked example
Suppose it is 3:00 PM on July 15th in New York (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-4) and you need the matching time in London (British Summer Time, UTC+1 during summer). The five-hour difference means the converter shows 8:00 PM in London on the same day. Now try the same conversion for January 15th instead: New York is on Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5) and London is on Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+0), a five-hour difference again, so 3:00 PM in New York still becomes 8:00 PM in London, even though both zones' offsets from UTC changed.

Why did my converted time change by an hour compared to last month?
This usually happens when one of the two regions has entered or exited daylight saving time. Since the two zones may not shift on the same calendar date, or one of them may not observe daylight saving at all, the effective difference between them can change during the year.
Does every country observe daylight saving time?
No. Many countries near the equator skip it entirely since day length varies little there, and some countries that historically used it have since abolished the practice. Always confirm current rules for less familiar regions if precise scheduling matters.
Can converting a time change the calendar date?
Yes, this is common. Converting a late evening time to a zone many hours ahead can push the result into the next calendar day, and converting an early morning time to a zone far behind can push it back to the previous day.
How far in advance can I trust a daylight saving conversion?
Converting a date within the current or next daylight saving cycle is generally reliable, but time zone rules can occasionally change due to local legislation, so a conversion for a date years in the future carries slightly more uncertainty.
Is UTC the same as GMT?
They are close enough for everyday scheduling purposes and share the same current offset most of the year, but UTC is a modern time standard maintained by atomic clocks, while GMT is technically a specific time zone that some countries still use as their winter local time.
