Result
7.84049 L/100km
30 mpg (US) = 7.84049 L/100km
Distance-per-fuel units (mpg, km/L) and fuel-per-distance units (L/100km) move in opposite directions, so the conversion between them is an inverse, not a multiplication. A value of zero has no inverse and shows a dash.

About this calculator
Fuel efficiency can be described two opposite ways: how far you travel per unit of fuel, like miles per gallon or kilometres per litre, or how much fuel you burn per unit of distance, like litres per 100 kilometres. This converter switches between both styles and between US and imperial gallon definitions.
How it works in plain English
Distance-per-fuel units, such as miles per US gallon, miles per imperial gallon, and kilometres per litre, all describe efficiency directly: a bigger number means the vehicle travels farther on the same amount of fuel. Fuel-per-distance units, such as litres per 100 kilometres, litres per kilometre, and gallons per 100 miles, describe the opposite idea: a bigger number means the vehicle burns more fuel to cover the same distance, so a smaller number is now the more efficient one.
Because these two families measure inverse relationships, the converter can't simply multiply by a fixed factor when switching between them. Instead, it first converts the distance-per-fuel value into a common measure, kilometres per litre, then takes the reciprocal of that number when the target unit belongs to the fuel-per-distance family, or vice versa when going the other direction. This reciprocal step means a value of zero has no meaningful conversion in either direction, since travelling zero distance on any amount of fuel, or burning zero fuel over any distance, doesn't correspond to a real efficiency figure.
Choose your source and target units from the from and to menus, enter a number, and the converted figure appears at once, backed by a table listing the value across every supported unit. Adjustable precision controls the number of decimal places shown, and a swap button reverses the conversion direction instantly.
The formula
- km/L = 235.214583 ÷ (L/100km)
- L/100km = 235.214583 ÷ mpg(US)
- 1 mpg (US) = 0.425143707 km/L
- 1 mpg (UK) = 0.354006 km/L
- 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L
- 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km
Worked example
Suppose a car is rated at 30 mpg (US) and you want that figure in litres per 100 kilometres. Using the direct relationship, L/100km = 235.214583 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km. This means the car burns about 7.84 litres of fuel to travel 100 kilometres.
Entering 30 into the mpg (US) field with L/100km selected as the target returns 7.84 L/100km immediately. The accompanying unit table also shows that same rating equals about 12.75 km/L and roughly 36.03 mpg (UK), since imperial and US gallons hold different volumes even though both use the word 'gallon.'

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't the converter just multiply by a fixed factor like other unit converters?
Distance-per-fuel units and fuel-per-distance units describe inverse relationships rather than the same quantity on a different scale. A vehicle that improves from 10 L/100km to 5 L/100km has doubled its efficiency, not halved it, so converting between these families requires taking a reciprocal rather than a simple multiplication.
Why can't I convert a value of zero?
Zero has no inverse, since dividing by zero is undefined. A vehicle rating of zero miles per gallon or zero litres per 100 kilometres doesn't describe a real, physically meaningful efficiency, so the converter can't produce a fuel-per-distance or distance-per-fuel equivalent for that input.
Why is mpg (US) different from mpg (UK) for the same car?
A US gallon (3.785411784 litres) is smaller than an imperial gallon (4.54609 litres), even though both are called a gallon. Because of this, the same real fuel efficiency produces a higher mpg figure in the UK/imperial system than in the US system, so the two numbers aren't directly comparable without conversion.
What does litres per 100 kilometres actually measure?
It measures how many litres of fuel a vehicle consumes to travel a fixed distance of 100 kilometres, so a lower number always means better efficiency. This is the standard fuel economy format used across much of Europe and other regions that use the metric system for everyday measurements.
Can I convert between L/100km and L/km directly?
Yes, and this particular conversion is a simple scale rather than a reciprocal, since both units already measure fuel per distance. Dividing a L/100km figure by 100 gives the equivalent L/km value, and the converter applies this directly without needing to invert anything.
