About this calculator
This tool converts power values between watts, kilowatts, megawatts, mechanical horsepower, metric horsepower, BTU per hour, and tons of refrigeration. Pick your starting unit and the unit you want to convert to, type a number, and see the result update immediately.
How it works in plain English
Power measures the rate at which energy is used or delivered, and different industries have historically settled on different favorite units for it. Electrical devices are usually rated in watts or kilowatts, vehicle engines are often rated in horsepower, heating and cooling equipment frequently uses BTU per hour, and large air conditioning systems are sometimes rated in tons of refrigeration. Because all of these describe the same underlying rate of energy flow, they convert precisely using fixed numeric factors relative to the watt, the SI unit of power.
Using the converter is straightforward: choose the unit your value is currently expressed in as the "from" unit, choose your desired unit as the "to" unit, and enter your number. As you type, the converted figure updates live without any extra steps. If you picked the units in the wrong order, the swap button instantly reverses the direction of conversion. Below the main conversion, an all-units table shows your entered value already converted into every other supported power unit at once, which is convenient when comparing an engine's horsepower rating against its wattage equivalent, or comparing air conditioner ratings given in different unit systems. An adjustable precision setting lets you control how many decimal places are shown in the results.
The formula
- 1 hp (mechanical) = 745.699872 W
- 1 hp (metric, PS) = 735.49875 W
- 1 BTU/h = 0.29307107 W
- 1 ton of refrigeration = 3,516.85284 W
Worked example
Suppose an engine is rated at 150 mechanical horsepower and you want the equivalent in kilowatts for a specification sheet. Multiply 150 by 745.699872 to get 111,854.98 watts, then divide by 1,000 to express it in kilowatts, giving approximately 111.85 kW.
In the converter, you'd set "from" to mechanical horsepower and "to" to kilowatts, then enter 150. The live result immediately shows about 111.85 kW. The all-units table also displays the same power rating in metric horsepower, roughly 152.05 PS, letting you see both horsepower conventions and the metric wattage figure together without running separate calculations for each unit.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mechanical and metric horsepower?
Mechanical horsepower, sometimes called imperial horsepower, is defined slightly differently from metric horsepower (also called PS, from a German term). Mechanical horsepower equals about 745.7 watts, while metric horsepower equals about 735.5 watts, a difference of roughly 1.4%. Vehicle specifications from different countries or manufacturers may use either definition, so it's worth checking which one applies before comparing figures directly.
Why do air conditioners get rated in tons of refrigeration?
A ton of refrigeration originally described the cooling power needed to melt one ton of ice over 24 hours, a unit that predates modern electrical power ratings. It's still widely used for rating central air conditioning and large cooling systems because it maps intuitively onto cooling capacity, even though it can also be expressed precisely in watts.
What is BTU per hour used for?
BTU per hour is commonly used to rate the heating or cooling output of furnaces, air conditioners, and space heaters, particularly in the United States. It expresses how much heat energy, measured in British thermal units, a device can move or generate every hour, and it converts to watts using a fixed factor since both describe a rate of energy transfer.
Is power the same thing as energy?
No, they are related but distinct. Energy is a total amount, like the fuel used over a whole trip, while power is the rate at which that energy is used or produced at a given moment, like how fast fuel is being consumed right now. Watts measure power, and watt-hours or joules measure energy, so mixing them up can lead to conversion mistakes.
Can I compare an engine's horsepower to an electric motor's kilowatt rating?
Yes, since horsepower and kilowatts both measure power, they can be converted directly using the fixed factors this tool applies. This is useful when comparing a gasoline engine's horsepower rating to an electric motor's kilowatt rating, since manufacturers in different industries or countries often prefer one unit over the other for the same underlying measurement.
